On the Road Again

The first day of our outback adventure we left bright and early to drive from the Sunshine Coast to Biloela. We said goodbye to Mum and Dad and after the usual photos set off in J & G's car.  Of course we were always on the lookout for incidents of any kind especially on the Bruce Highway, which can be very busy at times.  The first stop was McDonalds at Gympie, where they serve great coffee and have clean toilets.  These two items are a neccessity when travelling and will probably feature on a daily basis.

After we turned off the Bruce Highway onto the Burnett Highway we had to stop for a short time to let a herd of cattle run along the road.  We were not sure exactly what the people were trying to achieve, but there were an old man, an old lady, a whip cracking man and a young boy trying without success to make the cattle go through an open gate.  They were having none of it and ended up racing back the way we had come from trying to escape.  I have a feeling the air was blue with curses.

We stopped at Gayndah and had a look at the drapery store there. Mellors Drapery uses a flying fox to send the cash paid for a purchase to a central cashier and then the change is returned the same way.  But if you are a tall person it will hit your head as the equipment was just over our heads.

A little further up the road we stopped for our lunch.  As the back door was opened, my homemade cupcakes tumbled out.  They had been so beautifully iced too.

Never mind. They still tasted good!

This is the spot where we had our lunch, just off the main road, so it was very peaceful. Claude Wharton Weir

A little further on we stopped to take a photo of an old tree which Judith has noticed.  Most unusual. There is an information board about this type of tree at the rest area at Mundubbera.

We drove through Mundubberra just for a look and then pressed on to Eidsvold.  We managed to avoid a large snake lying on the road.  We though it was dead, but as we approached it raised its head and decided to turn back to the side of the road.  Fortunately Grant's good driving meant we missed it and we turned our heads to see it slithering safely back into the grass at the side of the road.

Our next stop was Monto.  The Cafe and Craft shop there has really good coffee and toilets.  We sat in the shaded garden lounge and chatted for a while before heading up the road towards Biloela.

It was starting to get darker and we were watching the clouds piling up. On one side of the road it was thick cloud cover mixed with smoke from all the burning off and on the other side we had sunshine hitting the clouds.

We arrived safely in Biloela just after 5.00 pm in the late afternoon.  We had a yummy meal of Indian food from the Curry Bowl in Kawana.  This has to be some of the best Indian food around and Judith had bought some especially to put in the car fridge so we would not have to cook when we got here.  Of course here is the Silo Motor Inn.  A very good place to stay.

Stay with us as we travel around and enjoy a slice of rural Queensland.  Bye for now.
